Willingdon School of Ministry - Internship Program

What is it?  The Internship Program is a residency program that will prepare participants for life-long ministry within the context of the local church.

Who is it for?  This program will be open for those who meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized school or institution.
  • Committment to life-long ministry within the context of a local church.
  • Agreement with the theological framework of Willingdon Church (reformed in theology, Elder-led in ecclesiology, holding to anabaptist distinctives).1
  • Previous demonstration of teachability.
  • Competency in the English language.

How long is the program?  This is a two-year program where the intern will spend the first year learning and working in the context of the larger ministry.  The second year will provide opportunity for the intern to specialize in a specific ministry department.

What are the goals of the program?  There are three specific goals or purposes this program seeks to accomplish in the life of the intern:

  • Academics - To solidify biblical convictions
  • Ministry - To develop ministry philosophy and skill
  • Character - To build discipline toward godliness

What will an intern be doing?  During the first year the intern will be given ministry assignments that will help them develop general pastoral skills including working with such things as Discovery Groups, baptism preparation, funerals, pastoral care, church administration, and various levels of church education.  They will be involved in a mentor relationship with one of the Willingdon Church Elders and embark on a reading & study program that will strengthen their biblical convictions.

The second year of the internship will provide opportunity for the intern to focus on a particular area of ministry and join one of the specific ministry teams at Willingdon.  These will include the Children, Student, Adult, Pastoral Care or Pulpit ministry.  During this time they will be encouraged and nurtured by their participation with the Team Leader and other team members.

What about finances?  Since the intern will be joining the pastoral team of Willingdon Church, an appropriate salary will be offered the intern.  Along with the salary come expectations and accountability regarding workload and ministry involvement.

What can an intern expect at the end of the program?   At the end of the two year program there is no guarantee of employment at Willingdon, but the intern may be invited to join Willingdon's pastoral team, be involved in a church-extension ministry or be connected to another church seeking a qualified pastor.

How can I apply for the program?  The application process includes the following steps:

  • Completion of an application form
  • Completion of reference forms
  • Review of the application and references
  • An interview conducted either at Willingdon Church or another convenient location
  • A recommendation to the Admin Committee of Elders
