Amazing Promises To Dysfunctional People : Marks of the New Creation (1/13/2008)
Scripture passage: Genesis 33:1-20
Speaker: Pastor John Neufeld
Sermon Abstract:
Years ago, a very popular bumper sticker on Christian cars read, “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven.” I always had problems with that, because whereas it is true that we aren’t perfect and it is true that we are forgiven, that is not all. Paul speaks of having become a new creation, where all things are new. But how does this square with the idea that we aren’t perfect? Watching Jacob’s interaction with Esau in Genesis 33 provides a clear perspective of at least 6 ways in which those who have encountered God are in fact completely new. I believe the list of 6 changes found in Jacob’s life is a list of the kind of changes found in every person who has come to know Christ.
1. Sacrificial servant leadership
2. Unpretentious humility
3. Prepared to give God the credit
4. A high priority on reconciliation and peace
5. The development of wisdom
6. The priority of worship
